From the new album Stolen Time, out April 22, 2022 on Outside Music.

I'm proud of how this one turned out. It's a simple song about the hopes and hardships of starting a new life -- inspired in part by my own family's legacy of fleeing the old country as immigrants and refugees, as well as today's ongoing (and worsening) migrant crises. I wrote it a few years back but never quite had a recording or arrangement I was happy with, and wasn't sure if I'd attempt it for this album. We ended up capturing a stripped-down performance in the studio in a couple of live takes, with just vocals and electric guitar, then added some layers of nautical-sounding antique pump organ and accordion. It's one of my favourite songs on the new album (or any of my albums, I think).
Abigail Lapelltag:abigaillapell.com,2005:Post/69072932022-02-16T13:00:00-05:002022-02-25T13:35:18-05:00New Song & Video Out Now
Announcing the newest single and video from my upcoming album, Stolen Time, out April 22, 2022 on Outside Music.
Hey Friends! My brand new version of the iconic song by Creedence Clearwater Revival is out now. Check it out wherever you listen to music and let me know what you think!

I started putting together a Great Canadian Cover Songs playlist featuring some of my favourites (including a bunch of pals) so take a listen and hopefully discover something new.

“Fortunate Son” was written as a protest song about the Vietnam war, and the lyrics touch on the wider power structures and class dimensions of that era. In today’s context, I think the original message still resonates in a different way -- with the movement for climate justice, for example, and how the terror of environmental crisis or the coronavirus pandemic are distributed so unevenly throughout society between the haves and the have-nots.

I had a great time recording this song with Dan Fortin on bass and Jake Oelrichs on drums, both amazing players and longtime collaborators. We came up with a very minimal arrangement based on this sparse, almost-r-n-b-like guitar groove, and recorded the whole thing live off the floor. I added a bunch of harmony overdubs but otherwise kept it super simple. My aim with this track is to pay homage to a timeless classic while twisting it into something a bit new and unexpected.

Happy Fall, y’all!!! I have so much to be thankful for for this season -- and a few developments in particular that I'm excited to share:

First, I've won the 2020 Recording Artist of the Year Award from Folk Music Ontario and ACTRA/RACS!!! Huge congratulations to all this year’s FMO Awards winners (the full list is here) and a big thank you to the FMO board and staff.

Also announced this month, I'm one of six 2020 New Folk winners at the venerable Grassy Hill Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk competition!!! Congrats and virtual hugs to all my new New Folk family (check out the finalists and winners here).

In other news, I've been selected as one of ten artists in this year's Allan Slaight Juno Master Class long list -- alongside an amazing group of Canadian musicians. You can learn more about the program and the rest of the long list here -- and check out this sweet graphic of me and my Gibson, emerging from some kind of swirling, neon vortex of ROCK AND ROLL. Super excited.

Huge congratulations to all the CFMA nominees and recipients this year -- I was so looking forward to seeing everyone in person, and performing with my band, at the awards weekend in Charlottetown, PE, but obviously that wasn't possible this time around. The awards announcement did go live online Saturday night, and I'm really grateful to the staff, volunteers, jurors, and everyone who made this year's virtual proceedings possible. Thanks for supporting Canadian folk music. And a big shout out to the amazing team of collaborators and musicians who were a part of this project.
Abigail Lapelltag:abigaillapell.com,2005:Post/59963812019-12-07T14:21:38-05:002019-12-07T14:21:38-05:00Canadian Folk Music Awards Nominations
I'm so excited to share that my album GETAWAY has been nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards, for Contemporary Album of the Year and English Songwriter of the Year.
And if you're in Toronto this weekend, we're playing the Cameron House September 23rd, 6pm with Melanie Brulee, Scarlett Jane, Shawn William Clarke and Darcy Windover. Come out and say "gute Reise"! (That's "bon voyage in" German.) (Side note: I have been learning German. it is SUPER hard! But fun!!)

In other news, my album Hide Nor Hair was just nominated for two 2017 Canadian Folk Music Awards -- for Contemporary Album of the Year and Contemporary Singer of the year! Congratulations to all the amazing and talented nominees!

I was also nominated for two Toronto Independent Music Awards, in the Folk/Roots and Best Video categories. Here is the video in question, Night Bird and Morning Bird -- a beautiful small movie created by Montreal's Panadream Theatre.

I'm just back from a 4-week tour out west, and I'm excited to share a new live video c/o Montreal's Here On Out sessions -- shot on a beautiful, windy, audio-shredding day in Montreal's Jardin due crepuscule/twilight sculpture garden, one of my favourite local haunts...

Tonight I'm playing a few blocks away at another old haunt, Le Cagibi, where I spent so much of my Montreal-dwelling twenties. I'm joined by the breathtaking banjo-and-guitar-wielding Corey Gulkin (and trio), plus sweet songs from local songwriter Sweet Roger. Besides that, there are some really nice shows coming up over the next couple of months around Ontario -- click here for local listings and drop me a line with any questions.

Finally, I am heading to Germany and the Netherlands this fall with lovely Toronto songwriter Shawn William Clarke -- we still have a few dates available, so if you have ideas for venues/house concerts/etc worth checking out I'd love to hear from you! Take care and keep in touch. xx A
Abigail Lapelltag:abigaillapell.com,2005:Post/46017692017-02-22T11:36:21-05:002017-02-22T11:36:21-05:00Reviews :: New Video on CBC Searchlight

Click here to see NEW VIDEO on CBC Searchilight
Featuring Laura Spink, Rachael Cardiello and Joe Ernewein
January 20 - HIDE NOR HAIR Album Launch - January 20, 2017 at the Burdock in Toronto.

Thank you to everyone who came out to and played and/or helped set up shows in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
I just got back from participating in my first ever artist residency in northern Michigan.
I arrived just in time to catch a riot of fall colours breaking out, and spent so many beautiful days writing songs and walking in the woods — sometimes at the same time. If you would like to hear some of these new songs, I’m playing shows in and around the Toronto area over the next months. Then, in the new year I will be recording some of these songs so as to release a new record.

Then I will tour all over. So stay tuned.

Touring/traveling across Europe and the U.K. has been a pretty wild ride, as they say – so many new and old friends have made the road feel more like home, and I miss you all already. Can’t wait to visit again soon.

If you’re in the London area, I have a couple more shows coming up this weekend before flying away home.

Then I’m heading back to Canada, where I’ll play a string of shows around Ontario and Quebec in December/January. As always see here for the latest.

What else? I’m planning to head west and south this winter to visit B.C. and California. If you can help set up a show in your town, please email me! Also finishing up some new songs and, with any luck, will start working on a new record some time in the new year.

In the meantime keep in touch and stay tuned. Huge love.

First, so many thanks to everyone who came out to my album launch this past week. It was a magical night and an honour to share it with so many beautiful musicians and friends. Charms and Simone Downes, your music is a total inspiration. So so lovely all around.

And now I’m off on tour, with a few little breaks, for the next six weeks. Coast-to-coast. No stone unturned. I can’t wait to play in a lot of these towns for the first time ever, and revisit some old faves.

If you live in Canada, chances are good I am playing in (or reasonably near) your town, so check out the “Shows” page and come out and say hi.

xo

P.S. My album is now available on iTunes and through “Music” page on this site, in physical and digital forms. It can also be requested from your local college/community radio.

I have some exciting SHOWS coming up in the next couple of weeks in Montreal, Halifax and Toronto. Also, a NEW ALBUM in the very final stages of gestation and audio wizardry. More ALL CAPS UPDATES soon soon soon.

For now, I’m busy learning Gordon Lightfoot covers and train songs to perform on board the old MTL-HFX line, aka “The Ocean”. (Can a horrible pun about “hot tracks” be far behind!?) If you’re a musician who loves free train trips, you too can get in on VIA Rail’s On Board Entertainment Program.

And if you’re in Montreal on Tuesday, January 25th, you can come hear me play an early set (9pm!) at Casa del Popolo with THE DAMN TRUTH.

Then in Halifax on Thursday, January 27th, at the Bus Stop Theatre, I’m playing with the amazing RAE SPOON and AMBRE MCLEAN as part of In the Dead of Winter Festival.

For those of you in Toronto, on Wednesday, February 2nd my friend and terrific songwriter SARAH GREENE is launching her debut solo album, Toronto Blues, at the TRANZAC Main Hall — along with a lineup of super special guests. I recommend getting there early, at 9pm!

Stay warm and keep in touch, and I hope your year ahead is filled with hot tracks.

I recorded a traditional Hebrew song called “Sevivon” (aka “Spin Little Dreidl”) for the wonderful and free-to-download Feats of Strength 2010 Holiday Compilation!!

Snow is piling up outside; the new year is approaching. I am very excited to say that my new album is really very close to DONE, and it has a name: Great Survivor. It also has eight songs and features some exciting collaborations. If all goes well, it will be released come spring. Stay tuned for more info on how you can pre-order your very own copy.

In the meantime, if you’re seeking a thrifty gift for that special someone, perhaps you might consider purchasing some of my music . All proceeds will help with album-related costs.

This week I’ll be playing my last two shows of the old year. Tonight I’m in Hamilton at the Casbah Lounge, for the world debut of BLACKBURN (feat. Pete Hall) with Joel Elliott. Tomorrow, I’m joined by Halifax charmer Klarka Weinwurm at the Imperial Pub as part of the 50 River concert series.

There’s more stuff coming up in the new year, including In the Dead of Winter Festival in Halifax next month, and a west coast tour this spring — so check the shows page for more news as it happens.

Till then, wishing everyone a safe and happy winter wonderland.
